On-loan Portsmouth midfielder Alex Robertson has offered his goodbyes to supporters as he returns to parent club Manchester City.

The Australian international posted on X [7 May] to give his thanks to the Pompey faithful for their support during his loan spell at Fratton Park, in which he flourished during the first half of the campaign before suffering a long-term injury.

Robertson, 21, made his Socceroos debut whilst performing on the South Coast and fans were in awe of his dominant, assured midfield displays in a Pompey shirt.

Upon leaving Fratton Park, Robertson said: "What a pleasure it was to play for Pompey.

"A massive thank you to all the staff, the players and the incredible fans for the support and help in my time at Fratton Park.

"I loved every minute at the club and I wish everyone the best for the future. Play Up Pompey."

Could Alex Robertson make a Portsmouth return?

His injury blow midway through the campaign means although he leaves with a League One winner's medal, there's still that feeling of unfinished business.

There is little chance he'll be involved in Pep Guardiola's plans next season, and the next step of natural progression would be the Championship.

Robertson is grateful for his time at Pompey as John Mousinho and the club enabled him to grow as a footballer, and his performances demonstrated that he is considerably above League One level in terms of natural ability.

The club are expected to wait to see how many recruits they may look to bring in over the summer as contract talks continue with several of their current squad whose deals are up next month.

Midfielders Marlon Pack (offered a contract) and Joe Morrell (talks ongoing) are likely to have a bearing on whether Pompey could part with a likely rising loan fee to prise Robertson from Manchester for another season.
