Portsmouth have hailed Kusini Yengi on social media after his goal helped seal victory for Australia on Thursday afternoon.

In a post on X [6 June], Pompey paid tribute to their Aussie striker, who added a second international goal to his tally in the Socceroos' World Cup qualifying group win against Bangladesh.

Yengi has adjusted excellently to English football since his arrival at Fratton Park, netting nine goals in 26 League One appearances as he prepares for the Championship - winning the hearts of many on the South Coast with some crucial moments in there.

And Portsmouth's social post, simply reading: "YENGI, YENGI, YENGI" followed by an Australian flag has brought in a swarm of Pompey fans ready to show more adulation to the 25-year-old.

Kusini Yengi making an impact for both Portsmouth and Australia

As a Portsmouth native who spent almost a year up until April living in Australia, I can safely say the football fans Down Under hold a special place for their stars who have found European clubs after success in the A-League, as Yengi and his brother Tete have done.

Yengi is the sole reason a certain demographic of Aussie "sokkah" followers have taken a shine to Pompey, and his form has been worthy of trying his hand at Championship level, which only a small number of Australians have achieved in recent years.

He is now a regular in a Socceroos team reclaiming some of its attacking prowess back, with teenage wonderkid Nestory Irankunda making his full international debut in Thursday's 2-0 win at Bangladesh in which Yengi scored. Irankunda was briefly a teammate of Yengi's at Adelaide United, and is now set to move to Bayern Munich.

Portsmouth have a transfer budget set in stone this summer and John Mousinho will certainly bring in a host of new recruits, but will be mindful of the backbone of his side that got the club back to the Championship and it's realistic to suggest Yengi will get his chance at Fratton Park again next term.
