Portsmouth boss John Mousinho has lauded the signing of Jordan Archer at Fratton Park, recognising the goalkeeper's wealth of experience.

Pompey completed the signing of Archer at the end of last week and Mousinho knows first hand what the 31-year-old can bring having played alongside him at Oxford United.

Archer has signed a two-year deal on a free transfer, arriving after an uncertain period with QPR, to bolster Pompey's options between the sticks ahead of a return to the Championship.

"Jordan brings a wealth of experience and knows what it takes to compete at this level of the game," Mousinho said in quotes reported by BBC Sport (27 June).

"I had the pleasure of playing alongside him a few years ago when he came to Oxford for a brief spell.

"So I know that he’s a brilliant character and a great professional to have around the dressing room, as well as being an excellent goalkeeper."

Archer has experience of the Championship with two seasons as first-choice in the second tier while at Millwall, alongside sporadic appearances for Middlesbrough, which will benefit Portsmouth in their first season at this level for 12 years.

Mousinho has taken advantage of a lengthy contacts book having only retired from playing to take the Pompey job 18 months ago, a tactic which helped in the signing of Josh Murphy from Oxford United.

The club have so far made four summer signings since promotion, with Archer and Murphy joining Barnsley right-back Jordan Williams, and highly-rated non-league youngster Reuben Swann.

Pompey's preparations for the season ahead will be made to feel more real and ever closer now, with the announcement of the EFL fixtures handing the team a visit to Elland Road to take on Leeds United on August 10's opener.
