John Mousinho admits Portsmouth are finding it difficult to secure further loan deals to strengthen the squad due to the stagnation in the loan market.

As is often the case, a merry-go-round of loan transfers often picks up pace towards the latter stages of a window, starting from when Premier League clubs settle on their first-team squads.

Mousinho and the wider backroom team are keen to add to the nine recruits so far made over the summer, with five debuting against Leeds United on Saturday.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent's Andy Moon [15 August], the Blues boss said: "The loan market still isn't moving, and it'll probably start to move a bit after this weekend when the Premier League clubs have got their squads back.

"It might even have the opposite effect when you see some youngsters feature in squads and starting line-ups [in the Premier League] so we're going to have to wait and see on that one.

"We have to bide our time and when we do get new additions, get them involved in the group and in training as quickly as possible."

Portsmouth far from finished yet

Despite nine new faces in the building, Portsmouth are looking to strengthen further and bulk out their squad with more Championship experience.

That has been a theme of several of this summer's signings, with the club looking to save a few of their squad's loan slots for when the loan market springs into life in the final days of the window.

So far of the players brought in, only Sam Silvera has been signed on loan, borrowed from fellow Championship club Middlesbrough until the end of the season.

Some sections of the support are beginning to grow restless as they feel a lack of funds have been invested into the squad, as the club watch others in the division fork out millions on players and sell their assets for similarly large sums.

Pompey are, for now, spending within their means and attempting to operate as savvy as they can within a budget they are comfortable with - if that can establish the side in the second tier ahead of a bigger push next year, so be it.
