Portsmouth have been predicted to finish in 18th place in the Championship by Opta Analyst.

The statistics-based website shared an updated predicted final table on Monday (19 August) after two rounds of fixtures.

Pompey are backed to finish four places above the relegation zone, with a 15.22 per cent chance of going down.

Cardiff City, Preston North End and Millwall are named as the three most likely teams to drop into League One at this stage.

Portsmouth will defy expectations

Many expected Portsmouth to go straight back down to League One, and supporters will certainly not get carried away after two positive results.

The opening-day 3-3 draw at Leeds United filled fans with confidence, before drawing 0-0 with Luton Town - a Premier League side three months ago - at Fratton Park on Saturday (17 August).

Two points from a possible six is hardly something to shout from the rooftops, but the calibre of opponent has to be factored in.

Leeds and Luton, remember, were named as two of a handful of contenders to go up automatically this season.

If John Mousinho's men can repeat these performances against lesser opposition, they have every chance of finishing higher than 22nd - and that remains the only target.

The games do not get any easier, as a trip to Middlesbrough next weekend is followed by the visit of Sunderland before the international break.

Realistically, if Pompey can take three points from those two games then this would have been a more-than-decent start to life back in the second tier.
