Portsmouth are considering going back in for Australian defender Hayden Matthews, according to The News.

The report from the local news outlet [29 November] suggests Matthews is firmly on Pompey's radar, having carved himself a regular first-team spot with Sydney FC in the A-League.

The Blues had reportedly looked to launch a £900,000 bid for the towering central defender in the summer [The News, 28 August], who is still just 20 and has only been playing professionally for a single year.

Portsmouth considering Hayden Matthews bid

John Mousinho has deliberated with his defensive options a lot so far this season to varying success.

Regan Poole and Tom McIntyre have tended to be the first-choice central pairing at the back with Conor Shaughnessy's prolonged absence, and new signing Ibane Bowat out essentially for the season.

It was captain and midfielder Marlon Pack who was chosen to partner Poole against Preston North End in Pompey's last outing nearly three weeks ago [9 November], with Ryley Towler's availability still snubbed.

With a squad reshuffle expected including several outgoings, Matthews may be tempted to try his hand in the Championship having only excelled from Sydney's academy this time last year.

He has worked his way into Socceroos recognition as well, alongside Blues striker Kusini Yengi, and stands at 6'5'' with a physical presence which could suit EFL action.
