John Mousinho issues transfer update as Portsmouth approach Deadline Day

Portsmouth are content with the business they have done in the winter transfer window but will be “monitoring the market”, John Mousinho has said.

Mousinho, speaking after the goalless draw with Burnley at Fratton Park (1 February), admitted he feels Pompey are already in a “strong position” having secured six incomings so far.

Rob Atkinson, Isaac Hayden, Thomas Waddingham, Hayden Matthews, Cohen Bramall and Adil Aouchiche have all arrived to bolster the squad, with the list of departures expecting to be added to before the window slams shut at 11 pm on Monday (3 February).

“We’re not going to switch our phones off but the fact we’ve got six in already, we feel in a strong position so we’ll just be monitoring the market,” Mousinho said (via Andy Moon on X, 2 February).

Portsmouth to surprise fans with one more?

Portsmouth have importantly not ruled out any further arrivals before the window closes on Monday night.

Mousinho understandably doesn’t want to get supporters’ hopes raised too much in case it’s a very slow day at Fratton Park, but the transfer market can change within the blink of an eye.

Pompey do have to be careful with PSR and have one of the Championship’s smallest budgets to boot, but the club – for what they are working with – have made a fair few astute signings since promotion.

What is key now is that players already in the squad remain fit until the end of the season, with Conor Shaughnessy’s return a particularly pertinent example – he was excellent against Burnley on his first start since August.

It could be a quiet day; it could also spring up a moment which could live long in the memory of the Fratton faithful if a surprise arrival makes it seven.
