Colby Bishop outlines two things Portsmouth must do to ‘move forward’

Portsmouth enjoyed their first season back in the Championship as they secured survival with relative ease, and they will now hope to kick on from there.

John Mousinho helped Portsmouth return to the Championship for the first time in 12 years, and he led them to 16th place on a low budget compared to their rivals.

Colby Bishop played a key part in their promising campaign, scoring 11 league goals after missing the start of the campaign.

The striker has already shared his optimism that Pompey can continue to progress up the table next season and outlined two things they must do.

Bishop calls for Portsmouth to take next step

Bishop has praised his Portsmouth teammates, but also called for his side to take another step in their progress next season.

Speaking to the BBC (May 06), Bishop claimed that if Portsmouth’s players can remain injury-free and if they strengthen the squad in the transfer window, they can enjoy an even better season next year.

“Last year was a rocky start, so I’m looking forward to having a fresh start, coming back fit and seeing where this team can take it,” Bishop stated.

“If we have a fully fit team next year with some of the lads we’ve got and a couple more signings, I think we’ll be a very strong team.

“I think the club has moved forward so much since I first came here, and behind the scenes, they’re still trying to make it so much better, so I think it’s only going to go in one direction.”

Portsmouth have potential to climb up Championship table

If Portsmouth can keep hold of Mousinho and their key players, and increase the strength and depth of their squad, they can climb up the table next season.

Portsmouth are the only side in the bottom half that did not change their manager this season, and this stability can give them a platform for success.

Mousinho is now one of the longest-serving managers in the Championship, and this is a united group, but one which suffered from several injury issues over the course of the season.

If the depth in key areas, such as centre-back, can be improved, and key players can remain fit throughout, then Portsmouth can climb to new heights which they have not touched in decades.
