Portsmouth fined by FA after incident v Sheffield United at Fratton Park

Portsmouth have been fined £6,000 after the FA found them guilty of failing to control their players against Sheffield United.

The financial punishment is lighter than that of the Blades who were stung with a £40,000 fine, as confirmed on the FA website [17 October] following the 0-0 draw at Fratton Park on 28 September.

Sheffield United players surrounded the match officials upon the full-time whistle before a "mass confrontation" occurred once Portsmouth players had approached the scene.

Portsmouth's sanction is the fourth the club have faced in the past five years, while for their Yorkshire visitors, it was their eleventh, including a fourth in 2024 and a third from September alone.

This was the key reason behind the stronger punishment upheld for the Blades, who remain unbeaten and sit second in the Championship.

Pompey, sitting 23rd and awaiting a first league win, have avoided a more brutal financial hit with a previous case in each of 2020, 2022 and 2023 on their record.

The club received separate fines of £2,500 for all three of these cases, while Sheffield United's latest charge takes their total sanction fees beyond £115,000 since the start of 2022.

In terms of on-pitch disciplinary statistics, Portsmouth are yet to receive a red card this season in the Championship but have accumulated 24 bookings.
