How has Portsmouth's Hayden Matthews gone from top-50 wonderkid to being frozen out at Bradford?
Hayden Matthews has gone from Portsmouth future star to barely used at Bradford City.
It was a summer move that seemed to make sense for all parties.
The 22-year-old needed to go out and get some regular minutes under his belt despite a positive start on the south coast.
The defender came in from Sydney FC in January 2024 and made an immediate impression before his injury.
That limited him to just 20 appearances over his first season and a half at Fratton Park.
Things have follow suit at Bradford for other reasons, but where have things gone wrong?
How highly rated was Hayden Matthews at Portsmouth?
It isn't very often that the Blues get hold of a player who is seen as one of the best in the world.
That was once the case for the Australian after coming in over a year ago.
The centre-back was named by World Soccer magazine as its '50 wonderkids' across the world.
That was no mean feat and showcases the height of expectation surrounding his future as recently as February 2025.
His £1.2million deal looked to be worth every penny at the time, but it doesn't seem to be the case right now.
Why is Matthews struggling at Bradford City?
There is always a fear that a loan spell won't work out for any reason.
These sorts of moves are meant to benefit everyone, and most importantly, give the player in question gametime.
That hasn't been the case for Matthews at Valley Parade as he has made just three appearances.
He is yet to feature in a single League One game having only featured in the Carabao Cup and Jersey Mikes Trophy.
It could be to do with the Chickens' place towards the top of the division and fight for promotion.
That hasn't impacted the thought of him at Portsmouth as John Mousinho says he still has a part to play at Fratton Park.
Regardless, that still feels like a sizable drop off for someone who was once seen as one of the brightest talents in the world.
It will now be interesting to see what he can do across the rest of the campaign and then once he returns to Pompey.
