Marlon Pack given new role for Portsmouth clash vs Southampton - it could be a masterstroke

Published on:

Marlon Pack may have an even bigger role to play for Portsmouth against Southampton than previously imagined.

John Mousinho's men make the short trip to St Mary's on Sunday afternoon.

Pack struggled with an injury issue prior to the international break, but he has otherwise started for Mousinho when available.

The 35-year-old is as experienced as they come and has tasted South Coast derbies.

But it may well be that Pack plays a big role for Mousinho before a ball has even been kicked.

In a fixture when the finest margins count, it could be a masterstroke from Mousinho.

What is planned for Marlon Pack pre-Southampton game?

Pack should start for Portsmouth against Southampton if he is available.

The big question is whether the three-week break has been sufficient enough to get the 35-year-old back to full fitness.

Regardless, Pack will be part of the squad for this weekend's massive showdown.

And he has now revealed he will address the Pompey squad in the dressing room before kick-off.

As shared by the BBC's Andrew Moon via X, Pack said: "I'll be giving an opinion of my experiences and what I've seen and obviously a perspective from a fan as well.

"I haven't got notes. It comes predominantly from the heart."

That inspirational chat really will pump the Portsmouth players up as they prepare to enter the cauldron.

What else has Pack said on chances of starting vs Southampton?

Pack was named among the Portsmouth subs in their last two matches.

He also missed the first two matches with a knee injury.

Asked if he is feeling ready to start against Southampton, Pack told Portsmouth's Express FM: "It has been weird, one that is hard to get any rhythm.

"Naturally we had a bulk period off after the Blackburn game, and then after that it has been business as usual, in terms of training.

"It's been a little bit harder with a smaller group; the coaching staff has found that balance of being able to get rest and some physical work in, as it's quite a large period of time without a game."

Pompey fans will have their fingers crossed that Pack will be available as his experience is invaluable.

If not, his speech before the game could give Portsmouth that one per cent more they need in a game they dare not lose.
