Portsmouth must look to bring Abu Kamara back to the club on loan next season in order to establish themselves in the Championship.

The winger excelled in John Mousinho's side during 2023-24, contributing heavily to Pompey's long-awaited promotion as League One champions with a squad-leading 10 assists, plus a further eight goals of his own [Soccerway].

Parent club Norwich City are currently in the midst of a play-off semi-final tie with Leeds United, and Pompey fans appear to be more hopeful of securing Kamara for a second season if the Canaries were promoted, limiting his chances of regular game time in David Wagner's side.

Abu Kamara makes Portsmouth a better team

Kamara has enjoyed his first real season in men's football this year, but you would think he has been around for years with the maturity, fitness and robustness he has shown as he became a Pompey champion.

The youngster has come through Norwich's ranks and Wagner and his staff will no doubt have kept a close eye on the numbers he has produced, clocking up eight key chances created on top of the 10 that were capitalised upon - often by leading scorer Colby Bishop, who has praised what Kamara brought to the side.

Abu Kamara
Abu Kamara has mesmerised Pompey fans with his performances

Kamara not only featured in all 46 games of Pompey's successful season, exhibiting his physical stamina for the level required after playing almost solely academy football, but also achieved an average Sofascore rating of 7.02, showing his consistency over a demanding and long period.

He completed 70 per cent of his passes [Sofascore], which is admittedly not the best of returns, but that figure rises to 76 per cent inside his own half.

With his eight League One goals shared equally between his left and right foot, the unpredictability of Kamara is another string to a bow that Wagner will be perhaps as keen as Mousinho to keep hold of should Norwich remain in the Championship next season.

With a bit of luck, that will not be the case and Premier League promotion for Norwich could pave the way for Kamara to return to Fratton Park in 2024-25.
