Portsmouth Women will face Southampton as one of their League Cup group opponents this season in a pulsating derby contest.

As confirmed via the official Portsmouth FC website [19 August], Jay Sadler's side have been drawn against their fierce local rivals Saints in a Group C fixture in the competition which will be announced in due course.

London City Lionesses and West Ham United complete the group with the draw having been made live on talkSPORT 2 by Lianne Sanderson on Monday.

There is also a chance seven-time winners Arsenal could add to the group, should they be eliminated early from the Champions League.

Portsmouth to add third derby to calendar

With Portsmouth and Southampton already set to come to blows in the Women's Championship this season, the League Cup provides a third South Coast derby for the season.

As it stands, the group fixtures are set to take place in each of October, November and December.

Pompey host Saints at Westleigh Park on Sunday 13 October, with the return league fixture scheduled for Sunday 25 March.

Sadler's side have undergone a thorough and rapid period of transition from amateur to semi-pro and finally full-time football, which begins this season following their excellent triumph of last year.

The club have been overwhelmingly busy in their preparations, with numerous professionally contracted staff now on board along with a succession of full-time retained players, supplemented by several new signings.
