Portsmouth have secured the future of one of their most talented prospects, as young goalkeeper Toby Steward has signed a new deal with the club, according to Pompey's official website.

The 19-year-old, currently on loan at Gosport Borough, has put pen to paper on a two-year extension at Fratton Park, with a club option of a further year.

Steward told portsmouthfc.co.uk: "It's absolutely brilliant to sign a new contract with this great football club.

"I've really enjoyed this season on loan at Gosport and I can't wait to keep pushing on and improving.

"The chance to play regular football has grown my confidence, and I've learnt a lot from [the Pompey goalkeepers] having had the chance to regularly work with them."

Steward gaining experience on loan from Portsmouth with Gosport Borough

Steward has spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Gosport, who are set to take on Salisbury on Wednesday night (1 May) in their Southern Premier South play-off semi-final.

Boro' concluded their league season with the best defensive record in the division, conceding just 43 goals in 42 matches.

Their squad also features former Pompey midfield man Danny Hollands, as well as ex-Academy products Bradley Tarbuck, Alfie Stanley and Harvey Rew.

It is excellent to see both Pompey's young prospects and local non-league clubs benefitting from the loan system. Steward has been a key part of Gosport's success so far this term.

Here's hoping the goalkeeper can add a promotion to his budding football CV in the coming days.
