Portsmouth are aiming to secure the long-term futures of Kusini Yengi and Colby Bishop in the near future, according to The News.

The city's local newspaper published on their website [14 July] that Pompey sporting director Rich Hughes is prioritising new deals for the pair, who have proven increasingly integral to John Mousinho's plans.

Bishop has netted over 20 goals in each of the last two seasons, while Yengi's stock has skyrocketed following a major impact for both Pompey and the Australia national side.

The duo are contracted until 2025, with the club holding the option of a further year.

Portsmouth to follow suit with strikers after Shaughnessy deal

One of the most encouraging pieces of news regarding Portsmouth of late is their security of Conor Shaughnessy to a new contract.

The Irishman was a rock at the back last term as Pompey raced to the League One title, and earned the Players' Player of the Year award at Fratton Park [Portsmouth FC, 17 April].

Bishop is as important as Shaughnessy in terms of the current spine of the team, while skilful marksmen like Yengi are vital to have around in multiple attacking positions - not to mention his character off the pitch, which BBC broadcaster Andrew Moon described last week as "engaging and intelligent".

A Championship-standard squad is slowly building in PO4 and, while this is not an overnight task, there are expected to be several incomings before the 10 August opener at Leeds United and even more additions before the summer transfer deadline.

To tie down the nucleus of the squad long-term is extremely important and the players themselves appear very happy and settled on the South Coast.
