Portsmouth favourite sends emotional message to fans after Fratton Park exit

Portsmouth ended their Championship season with a five-game unbeaten run after drawing 1-1 with Hull City on Saturday.

The Fratton Park club began the second-tier campaign with the goal of survival, a feat John Mousinho’s men comfortably achieved.

Portsmouth appeared set for a final-day defeat when Matt Crooks scored for Hull in the first half, but substitute Christian Saydee equalised for Mousinho’s men.

Pompey will now look to have a strong transfer window in preparation for next season after securing their Championship status.

Freddie Potts sends Portsmouth supporters emotional exit message

One of Pompey’s best players this term has been midfielder Freddie Potts, who has enjoyed a successful spell on loan in the Championship from West Ham.

After playing his last game in Portsmouth colours on Saturday (3 May), the 21-year-old sent a message to supporters on Instagram.

“A massive thank you to the players, the staff, the fans and everybody involved at Pompey for making this season as special as it has been for me,” he said.

“From my first day, it has been an honour for me to have represented this great club over the last year and to play in front of the incredible fans who have supported us through a season full of highs and lows.

“I am grateful to have learnt so much throughout the season, with experiences that I will look back on with pride and that I will never forget.

“This club is a special club that is only on the rise, and I wish everyone at Portsmouth nothing but the best in the future! Thank you once again.”

Portsmouth must work hard to replace Potts this summer

Portsmouth have enjoyed a strong return to the Championship and secured their second-tier safety with two games to spare thanks to consecutive wins over Norwich and Watford on Easter weekend.

Mousinho’s men will hope to enjoy an even more comfortable campaign next term, as the Fratton Park side look to further stabilise in the Championship.

If Pompey cannot agree another loan deal or permanent terms with West Ham for Potts, they will have to utilise the summer transfer window to land a replacement for the 21-year-old.

Potts has successfully acted as a metronome in the Portsmouth midfield and was a major contributing factor towards the Blues’ Championship survival.

His efforts in the middle of the park offered protection to Mousinho’s backline, while he also displayed his creative tendencies by notching four assists in 37 league appearances.

Potts will hope to become a regular feature for West Ham next season, while Pompey will likely miss his services.
