Yang Min-hyeok signs for Portsmouth – Which attacker could be axed?

Portsmouth are on the verge of kicking off their second campaign in the Championship, with the Blues travelling to take on Oxford United on Saturday.

Plenty of new faces have been added to John Mousinho’s squad ahead of the new season, with the likes of John Swift and Adrian Segecic set to increase Pompey’s attacking threat.

Another attacking addition was recently welcomed in PO4, with South Korean winger Yang Min-hyeok joining on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

Yang, 19, previously had a loan spell at QPR in the Championship, and is set to ignite some fierce competition for places in Mousinho’s starting XI.

Segecic must hit the ground running after Yang’s arrival

The Blues had success in the loan market last season, with Freddie Potts being a revelation in Mousinho’s engine room after he arrived from West Ham.

The Fratton Park faithful will be hoping that Yang can have just as successful a stay as Potts did on the south coast last season.

Given that Pompey typically deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation, fans have seen either Segecic or Callum Lang feature in the number ten role in pre-season, with the other operating from the right wing.

Given Lang’s impressive goalscoring campaign last season, Segecic must hit the ground running if he does not want to find himself on the bench, with Yang also mainly operating from the right flank.

Daniel Levy will not want his player to arrive at Pompey and simply rot on the bench, and perhaps Mousinho may face some pressure from Spurs to play their teenage ace.

Segecic cannot give Mousinho any reason to drop him

With Yang now seemingly breathing down the neck of Segecic, it is up to the Australian to prove his worth and show he should be starting every week, either in place of Lang or Yang.

After Paddy Lane’s recent departure, more depth on the wing for Pompey was needed, and now Mousinho will have a headache that all managers crave when it comes to selecting their starting lineup.

With Segecic having ambitions of playing in the World Cup next summer, he has to ensure he becomes an indispensable part of the team for Mousinho, and a competitive debut goal against Oxford would be a perfect first impression.
