John Mousinho 'should be sanctioned with touchline ban' after Wolves vs Portsmouth incident

Published on:

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho was involved in a touchline spat with Cesar Peixoto on Tuesday night.

Pompey turned up to Molineux and returned to Fratton Park with a dramatic late point in the bag.

After going behind on 62 minutes through Jordan James' goal, Mousinho's men looked destined for their first defeat since Southampton.

However, Terry Devlin's exquisite 86th-minute volley ensured scenes of bedlam in the away end, as well as on the touchline.

After the full-time whistle blew, Mousinho and Peixoto were expected, as is the same after every match, to shake hands in a mark of respect.

This didn't happen, however, with the two gaffers instead having both a verbal and physical spat.

Football is a passionate game, and especially at the highest levels when vast sums of money and livelihoods are at stake.

Emotions always run high after a late winner/equaliser too, with contrasting feelings of frustration and elation in the two benches.

Unfortunately, this spilled out on Tuesday night, as Mousinho and Peixoto got into it after the game.

Speaking exclusively with Pompey News, ex-FIFA official Keith Hackett wants to see action taken against both managers as a result.

"This behaviour is unacceptable and damaging to the image of the game," he said.

"They should be sanctioned with a touchline ban and a fine. Suggest also that the LMA (League Managers Association) have a meet with them to offer some operational advice."

But does the footage of the incident show a clear instigator, or are both Mousinho and Peixoto equally as culpable?

What John Mousinho 'politely' told Cesar Peixoto after Wolves vs Portsmouth scenes

Footage proves Mousinho should largely be absolved

Mousinho is 40 years old and Peixoto 46: naturally, both coaches could've done more to stop this situation escalating into what it did.

However, in footage captured by Sky Sports cameras and shared to X, it does clearly show the Wolves boss instigating the spat.

The footage starts with Mousinho seen with his back to the Wanderers boss, who is observed saying something to him which causes the Blues gaffer to turn round.

Initially, Mousinho leans in for a harmless embrace in what appears to be an attempt to disarm the tension, but Peixoto shoves Mousinho's arms away.

It's only then that the argument heats up, with Peixoto gesticulating and pushing people, to which Mousinho calmly stands his ground.

Eventually, Mousinho turns his back and begins walking onto the pitch, again showing his desire to defuse the situation.

Therefore, it would surely be extremely harsh to punish Mousinho for this incident, as unlike Peixoto, the footage shows he made multiple attempts to calm things down.
