Portsmouth were safe and sound on the final day in terms of their place in the Championship for next season, though some were not so fortunate.

Opponents Hull City made the long trip down to Fratton Park (3 May) knowing defeat would condemn them to League One football next season, with a draw meaning they would have to rely on Luton Town losing at West Bromwich Albion.

Matt Crooks gave Hull a first-half lead in PO4, before Christian Saydee levelled the scores. It remained that way as the contest finished 1-1, as West Brom did their bit for Hull by hammering five past Luton, at one stage taking a 5-1 lead before the relegated Hatters clawed it back to 5-3.

Luton fans sing for Pompey as goals rain in at West Brom

For much of the season, Portsmouth fans were reduced to feeling as if that final day fixture against Hull would be a fateful day for both clubs.

However, Pompey's tremendous Easter weekend proved enough to beat the drop, as they ended their campaign 16th and unbeaten in their last five.

Hull eventually did enough to stay afloat, as Luton hit three at The Hawthorns but their abysmal defending confirmed their second successive relegation.

Via footage from a Luton fan account (Lutontownfcnews) on Instagram (3 May), a Portsmouth supporter (JamesSetters05) posted on X showing the Hatters' away end at West Brom singing "Play Up Pompey".

Their side trailed by four goals for a considerable chunk of the second half and as they knew their side were getting beaten, one more Blues goal would have saved last season's Premier League side at Hull's expense.

Portsmouth can build for next season after successful finale

Portsmouth fans applauded the squad, management staff and their families in unison on Saturday, after the final whistle of a game which meant the world to the away end.

The Hull City fans were in superb voice throughout, even through their gritted teeth as they knew a Pompey winner more than 100 yards away at the Fratton End would be the one blow to knock them to the canvas.

Luckily for the Tigers it never came, as Pompey end a marathon season with a successful mini-run.

This summer will be crucial for the development of John Mousinho's Blues, who will face further threat next season as big-spending Birmingham City and Wrexham both join the Championship party.

From the Premier League, only one team raises the eyebrows of the Fratton faithful; those fixtures against Southampton will be where every eye is drawn come 26 June on release day.
