Revealed: Portsmouth's current ranking among every club in the world

Published on:

Portsmouth are aiming to push on this season in what is their third campaign back in the Championship.

After a barren 12-season spell away from the Championship, even dropping down to League Two, Pompey are now established in the second tier again.

Following 16th and 18th-place finishes in the past two campaigns, the hope is that John Mousinho's men can look up the table rather than over their shoulders.

However, Pompey are down in 20th place after eight games of this season, albeit they have at least one game in hand on every team.

A 1-0 loss to Southampton in last weekend's South Coast derby has soured the mood slightly after three games without a loss.

But where do Portsmouth currently find themselves in terms of their global ranking?

Portsmouth plummet after Southampton defeat

Portsmouth were on the end of a poor decision against Southampton, but the truth is Mousinho's men did not have enough quality in front of goal.

James Bree's 20th-minute goal proved the difference for Southampton, who had Cameron Bragg sent off prior to the interval at St Mary's.

After some steady if not spectacular results, that was a real setback for Pompey.

And it shows in Opta Analyst's latest global rankings, too.

Portsmouth have slipped 14 places in the updated standings on 14 October to 346th, now below NEC and one spot above another Dutch side in Heerenveen.

For what it is worth, Southampton are 104th on the list - only West Ham United (81) and Middlesbrough (94) are higher among Championship clubs.

Supercomputer predicts 13-and-a-half year first in Portsmouth vs Sheffield United

What is supercomputer now saying about Portsmouth's survival chances?

Pompey fans would desperately love to see their side in the mix for a playoff finish, with six teams now part of the end-of-season lottery.

However, staying up will be the first aim for Mousinho once again.

According to the Opta supercomputer, Pompey are expected to finish in 19th place this season on around 56 points.

That could all change, of course, but beating the drop may be a struggle, let along pushing on for the top half.
