Nicolas Schmid’s injury in Portsmouth’s 0-0 draw with Southampton has caused plenty of controversy.

The goalkeeper was involved in a clash with Connor Ogilvie, which saw the duo eventually both taken off for their injuries.

However, with the match now over, Portsmouth now have to deal with the repercussions of the incident, which could have a long-term effect on their season.

Nicolas Schmid and Connor Ogilvie injury updates

The goalkeeper is highly reliable between the sticks, and has already won Pompey numerous points this season.

On top of this, his understudy, Ben Killip, looked nervous in Portsmouth’s draw against Southampton, which has prompted further concern.

As a result, many of the Fratton Park faithful are keen to see the goalkeeper back in action as soon as possible. However, he could now be facing months out on the sidelines.

  • Schmid and Ogilvie clashed in the first half of the South Coast derby
  • The two were eventually forced off the field with their injuries
  • However, Mousinho blames Southampton's Tom Fellows for the clash

Andy Moon told BBC Sounds on 15 September: “Schmid has a hand injury. It was in a soft, bandaged cast as he left.

“It is a case of an X-ray, and they will find out the severity of that; they just don’t know at the moment. Mousinho was open and said it doesn’t look great.

“I spoke to Connor Ogilvie, who did have that massive lump on his head, but he said it was his neck that was causing the problem, which is what John Mousinho said.

“I guess we will see Ogilvie back sooner, especially if there is no particular damage to his neck, his head is okay, and it wasn’t a concussion issue.

“It is not out of the question that he could even be back next week.

“But for Schmid, if the hand is broken, you have got to be looking a few months out, and even if it is not broken, it is hard to see him coming back for next week.

“He is going to be out for a good few weeks in the best case.”

How big a loss will Nicolas Schmid be for Portsmouth?

If Schmid is out for months, it could be a big problem for Pompey.

The goalkeeper has bailed the South Coast club out numerous times already this season, which has helped maintain their good start.

According to Fotmob on 15 September, the goalkeeper has already prevented 2.77 goals this campaign, by far the most in the division.

Nicolas Schmid in the Championship this season
Appearances 5
Clean sheets 2
Goals conceded 3
Goals prevented 2.77
Save percentage 76.9%
Saves per 90 minutes 2.3
Schmid has impressed so far this season

On top of this, his save percentage is also extremely high, which has helped him keep two clean sheets.

Therefore, without Schmid, Portsmouth will no doubt be at a disadvantage, which could costly in their upcoming fixtures.
