Portsmouth are interested in signing Brighton & Hove Albion forward Mark O'Mahony on a loan deal this summer but face competition from Sheffield Wednesday, according to The News.

It was reported by the city's local news site on 23 August that Pompey are looking at O'Mahony as a potential player to boost their attacking options, following the absences of Colby Bishop and Kusini Yengi.

The Owls are also said to be in the hunt, as the Blues look to fend off their Championship rivals.

O'Mahony, 19, featured three times in the Premier League for Brighton last season, and the Irish teenager was on the bench in last weekend's win at Everton.

Portsmouth want Mark O'Mahony deal

John Mousinho has spoken previously about the loan market coming alive late in the window, with top-flight clubs settling on the pecking order of their squads.

This is bearing fruit now as Brighton are open to letting O'Mahony gather experience elsewhere this season.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 could also join Harvey Blair at Fratton Park, as Pompey look to conclude a permanent deal for the striker from Liverpool [Dharmesh Sheth, 21 August].

Mousinho has four of his five loan spots in the squad still available to fill in the final week of the transfer window, with Sam Silvera so far the only loanee to have arrived.

The move would provide vital attacking cover amid the injury concerns currently affecting Pompey, with Christian Saydee and Elias Sorensen the only striking options available to Mousinho heading into Saturday's long trip to Middlesbrough.
