Portsmouth would 'love' to re-sign Alex Robertson from Manchester City - BBC journalist

BBC broadcaster Andrew Moon reveals Portsmouth remain hopeful of bringing former loanee Alex Robertson back to the club this summer.

Moon spoke to Jordan Clark live on BBC Radio Solent [9 July] from Pompey's pre-season training base in Croatia, explaining that Robertson is still a player John Mousinho would like to see return to his squad.

Robertson played 23 league games on loan from Manchester City last season and performed classily in midfield, showing his flagrant ability to play at a higher level - and with Portsmouth now about to embark on a Championship season, the Australian international may benefit from a comeback.

Moon told Clark: "You look at the squad right now and you'd say [Portsmouth] probably need two central midfielders.

"When you talk about those midfield targets, [Pompey] would love to see Alex Robertson come back after his 'half-loan spell' last season. I'd say it's possible - players like that often don't become available for another few weeks, do they wait it out or get someone else who is available now?

"I think they would also like to see Tino Anjorin come back - he was on loan from Chelsea but obviously spent a lot of last season injured."

Portsmouth hope for Robertson return

From a Portsmouth perspective, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone against the potential of Robertson coming back to Fratton Park.

His elegance on the ball, the relaxed nature he brought to the middle of the park despite his young age and even his physical capabilities really struck a chord with fans, teammates and coaching staff alike.

After all, you're not on Man City's books without something about you - and now Pompey have achieved promotion, they are able to dip back into the City hierarchy and offer another year's worth of development which would be considered to benefit all parties.

Robertson's injury setback last campaign luckily didn't affect the Blues' promotion success but did deprive the supporters of a longer enjoyment period of a dynamic player with an exciting future.

The club's foundations of an Australian culture with Kusini Yengi and now Sam Silvera in the building may also provide an added appeal to the 21-year-old to pull on the royal blue for a second time.
