Kusini Yengi takes centre stage in Portsmouth win v Burton Albion amid Luton Town ‘surprise’

Luton Town manager Rob Edwards was in the directors’ box at Fratton Park as Portsmouth beat Burton on Tuesday night, according to The News.

The newspaper reported via their website on Wednesday (13 March) that Edwards’ appearance was a “surprise” as Kusini Yengi took “centre stage” by scoring twice in the 2-1 win.

Yengi, 25, recovered from missing a sitter by scoring his brace while The News suggests Colby Bishop will have also probably impressed Edwards, who has been widely praised for his job at Luton in the Premier League this season.

Kusini Yengi on fire as Pompey run goes on

Yengi’s double in the 2-1 win over Burton took him to 10 goals in all competitions for the season at Portsmouth.

The one-time Australia international, who joined Portsmouth from Western Sydney in the summer, has endured a stop-start campaign in League One.

The Aussie striker has made only 18 league appearances for Pompey this term with only five of them being in John Mousinho’s starting line-up.

Yengi started the season on fire with four goals in his first three games with two against Forest Green in the Carabao Cup and a goal against each of Bristol Rovers and Leyton Orient in the league.

However, an ankle injury then kept him sidelined for two months before he was unavailable for the whole of January and the first couple of weeks of February due to being in Australia’s Asian Cup squad.

But with two goals under his belt against Burton after starting just his second league game of the calendar year, you’d imagine Mousinho has plans for Yengi to continue starring for Pompey as they see out their promotion bid.
