Darren Ferguson shares ‘lucky’ Portsmouth verdict after what happened in 1-0 win v Peterborough

Darren Ferguson believes Portsmouth were “lucky” to claim a victory over Peterborough on Saturday (16 March).

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph on Saturday, the Posh boss insisted that his side were “by far by the better team” and, if anyone associated with Pompey thinks otherwise, then they are “kidding themselves”.

He added that it can be a “cruel game” after a Kusini Yengi goal on 77 minutes secured the table-toppers a 1-0 victory over their League One promotion rivals at London Road.

“There’s more than a sense of disappointment with the result,” said Ferguson. “I’m really proud of the performance as we were by far the better team.

“They’re lucky, they’re lucky to come away with a win. If anyone from Portsmouth says otherwise then they are kidding themselves.

“It can be a cruel game and we just couldn’t get that first goal. We need a bit of luck in big games, but we’ve had Ephron (Mason-Clark) hit the underside of the bar, yet performance-wise, I was really proud of them.”

Portsmouth take huge step towards promotion with Peterborough win

It was a huge three points for Portsmouth that has taken them one step closer to securing promotion to the Championship this season.

It’s been a long time since they competed in the second tier, but they now sit five points above second-placed Derby County and nine points above Bolton in third.

Although Peterborough perhaps deserved more following their performance, they weren’t able to break down a resilient Pompey backline.

John Mousinho, Portsmouth.

Ferguson is clearly disappointed by the result as a victory could have taken Posh to within six points of John Mousinho’s side with a game in hand.

But it wasn’t to be for them and now a place in the Championship is within touching distance at Fratton Park with just seven games left to play this season.
