League One: Supercomputer predicts Portsmouth, Derby and Bolton automatic promotion chances
Portsmouth are huge favourites to win automatic promotion from League One into the Championship, according to data by OptaAnalyst.
Opta’s supercomputer has crunched the numbers and after Saturday’s 1-0 win over Peterborough United, Pompey now have a whopping 93.4 per cent of finishing in the top two.
Portsmouth’s chances before Kusini Yengi’s winner at London Road were at 78.7 per cent so that 77th-minute goal changed things by 14.7 per cent.
As for the rest of the League One promotion hopefuls, Derby County have a 73.3 per cent shot at securing automatic promotion, Bolton Wanderers are at 15.9 per cent, Peterborough are at 13.1 per cent and Barnsley are at 4.3 per cent.
Portsmouth close in on automatic promotion to Championship
As it stands, John Mousinho’s side is top of League One with a five-point cushion between themselves and second place. There’s then another four-point gap from Derby to Bolton in third, meaning there are nine points between Portsmouth and the play-offs.
It would be quite the bottle job if Mousinho’s men were to let slip of that lead at the top with the Blues still set to play a bunch of promotion hopefuls in their run-in after this international break.
They won’t play again until Good Friday when they take on Wycombe Wanderers away from home. Wycombe are 12th but are in good form having won three games on the trot.
Portsmouth then still have to play Derby, Bolton, Barnsley and Lincoln, who are all currently placed seventh or above.
However, you would still back Portsmouth to finish the job because even if they were to lose one or two of the upcoming tough fixtures, you cannot see Bolton or any other club in the chasing pack being able to make up the ground.
This year is definitely Pompey’s year.
