Portsmouth: John Mousinho drops ‘bonus’ verdict amid fitness update on Chelsea loan gem

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho says any game time for Chelsea loanee Tino Anjorin before the end of the season will be a “bonus”.

The 22-year-old midfielder made the season-loan switch to Fratton Park in August 2023 (BBC Sport) and has scored twice in nine appearances across all competitions.

However, Anjorin has been sidelined since November with a hamstring injury and Mousinho has now admitted that any playing time with Pompey in the remainder of the League One campaign would be a bonus.

“Tino’s been looking to train with Chelsea, and when those boxes are ticked he’ll be back with us,” Mousinho told The News (22 March).

“He does need to tick all those boxes, though, not just in training but also a bit of strength testing.

“So he needs to do that before he‘s back with us, but he was at the Burton game and he’s keen to get back.

“When he does it will be full training, but it will be staged in terms of where we get him to in terms of games. I think anything we get with Tino (this season) will be a bonus.”

Tino Anjorin might not feature for Portsmouth again this season

Much was expected of Anjorin when he signed for Portsmouth, especially given he made his Chelsea debut at the age of 18 and has a handful of Premier League appearances to his name.

Unfortunately, his young career has been beset by injury problems, though, and the hamstring issue came as a huge blow at a time when he was wanting to establish himself in Portsmouth’s first team.

Pompey have, of course, done pretty well without him but it would have been a boost to have another attack-mind talent for the run in as Mousinho’s men try and get over the line and look forward to Championship football.

Instead, it looks like any further sight of Anjorin this season will be an added bonus and it remains to be seen what the youngster will do next season as he looks to kick on in his career. Let’s hope we do get to see him before the season is done.
