View: ‘Insane’ financial reality laid bare ahead of imminent Portsmouth promotion

Portsmouth must adapt to the “insane” financial reality of competing in the second tier again ahead of their imminent promotion to the Championship.

John Mousinho’s men are top of the League One standings, nine points clear of third-place Bolton Wanderers with a game in hand to play heading into the final stretch.

Pompey could therefore confirm their return to the Championship after 12 years away within the next few weeks should results continue in their current manner, meaning a nice financial boost.

And as Pompey Supporters’ Trust member Donald Vass pointed out via the club’s official website [24 March], it will mean a completely different landscape off the field.

Vass admitted that the second tier’s finances were “insane”, and for a club that has had its fair share of turmoil away from the field, it is something supporters will already be clued up about.

As pointed out by Radio Solent Portsmouth commentator Andrew Moon on the BBC’s website [26 March], the three teams relegated from the Premier League will receive £50million parachute payments.

That is more than Portsmouth turnover, which puts next year’s target – if promotion is indeed achieved – in stark focus. Surviving is the number one aim in 2024-25.

Many will look at Ipswich Town this season as they go in pursuit of successive promotions, but for every Ipswich there are triple the number of teams who fail to adapt.

The future for Portsmouth is incredibly exciting, but expectations must now adapt as we edge ever close to returning to the second tier of English football.

In other Portsmouth news, the club’s promotion prospects have been further boosted by news confirmed last week.
