Portsmouth: Sean Raggett delivers contract update amid promotion admission

Sean Raggett will not give any thought to a new contract at Portsmouth until the end of the season with his aim firmly on ensuring Pompey achieve promotion.

The 30-year-old has played a big role under John Mousinho this season, particularly after Regan Poole suffered a season-ending ACL injury back in November (Yahoo News).

Raggett has spent almost five years with Pompey after joining initially on loan from Norwich City in June 2019 but any thoughts on fresh terms are taking a back seat for now.

Speaking to BBC South reporter Andrew Moon, in quotes reported by the 72 (27 March), Raggett said: “The club and the players are just focusing on getting promoted, and all of that side of things will come at the end of the season I’m sure.

“I’ve not personally thought about it myself at all really. I’m a bit older now, I’m 30 years old, so a bit more experienced. You can’t sort of leave those things in the back of your mind and just get on with the job you’ve got at hand.

“Maybe when I was a bit younger I might have been thinking about it a bit more but now, it’s just full focus on getting promoted.”

Sean Raggett focused on promotion not Portsmouth contract

This is a fantastic attitude shown by Raggett, who at the age of 30 could be forgiven for wanting to be a little selfish and have more of an idea where he will be playing his football next season.

Instead, he is putting aside his own personal situation to focus purely on helping Pompey get back into the second tier of the EFL next season and that really is where every player needs to have his mind right now.

Mousinho’s men are absolutely flying in the third tier having opened up a five-gap over second-place Derby County at the top of League One – with the added bonus of a game in hand – while the gap to Bolton Wanderers in third is nine points.

The job, as Mousinho will be keen to stress, is far from complete and they have a big Easter weekend coming up but Portsmouth are getting ever close to achieving their aim and Raggett has been a key component in their quest.
