View: ‘Outstanding’ Portsmouth ace Marlon Pack getting recognition he deserves amid new nomination

John Mousinho has hailed “outstanding” Marlon Pack after the Portsmouth captain was nominated for the League One Player of the Year award.

The EFL announced Pack is up for the top individual accolade, along with Harrison Burrows and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.

Pack has played as big a part as anyone in Pompey’s automatic promotion push this season, playing in 33 of their 41 matches thus far.

The midfielder has been on the pitch for 79.6 per cent of the entire campaign [FBref], which is the fourth-best tally of any outfielder.

Reacting to the news of Pack’s nomination, Mousinho told the club’s official website [5 April]: “I think that Marlon particularly deserves the recognition because he’s had an outstanding season and I certainly believe he’s been one of the best players in the league.”

Pack has eight goals and seven assists for Pompey this season – only three others have more direct goal involvements – while always proving an assured presence in the middle.

Indeed, the 33-year-old had a pass-accuracy percentage of 84 in the 2-2 draw against Derby County last time out, completing 66 of his 79 passes [Sofascore]. That is slightly up on his average of 82.7 per cent across the whole season [WhoScored].

Pack also won five of his six duels against Derby, including 100 per cent of his two ground duels, and he was also successful with his only dribble attempt.

The former Bristol City and Cardiff City player boasts plenty of Championship experience, and that will come in handy once Portsmouth are officially promoted, should he indeed stay on.

In the meantime, there is every chance that Pack will come out on top in the voting and be crowned the best player in England’s second tier, which would be a deserved recognition.
