View: Portsmouth have simple transfer decision to make on Sean Raggett after latest comments

Portsmouth surely have a simple decision to make over the future of defender Sean Raggett after comments made this week.

Raggett is one of many Portsmouth players due to be out of contract at Fratton Park at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

Pompey are now on the verge of earning promotion to the Championship, but question marks remain over whether Raggett will stay at the club.

Sean Raggett contract situation at Portsmouth

Asked about his future, Raggett is quoted by The News [8 April] as saying: “I’m not thinking about my contract.

“Everyone is fully focused on getting promoted. There’s plenty of time to sort out things like that in the summer.

“I’ve not given it a second thought really; I’m just focused on getting this club out of this league. Everyone out of contract has the same mindset.

“Those sorts of things look after themselves. If you play well and are successful then contracts don’t really become an issue.”

Raggett may not have given a simple answer as to whether he will still be a Pompey player next term, but it sounds like he would sign a new deal if offered to him.

And on the basis of his performances, in which he has played in 35 of the club’s 42 League One games – 27 of those starts – it would be merited.

The 30-year-old particularly impressed in the 3-1 win over Shrewsbury Town last time out when used alongside Conor Shaughnessy.

Portsmouth must make call on out-of-contract players

Raggett won eight of his 12 attempted duels [Sofascore], including five out of six aerial challenges – a success rate of 83 per cent in the air.

The former Norwich City player’s six defensive actions, meanwhile, was a joint-high along with Shaughnessy.

No player on the field had more touches of the ball (103), with the defender completing 73 of his 88 attempted passes (83 per cent).

That is pretty much in line with his season average of 82.3 per cent which, for added context, compares to 80.9 for Shaughnessy [WhoScored].

Raggett also stands out in terms of clearances per game (3.6) – only two players can boast better – showing his importance at the back.

It may well be that Raggett is approached by another team, but you would hope that Portsmouth are able to first tie down the fan favourite.
