Portsmouth: Finance Expert reacts after £35m Michael Eisner reveal at Fratton Park
Dan Plumley has insisted that every club needs backing after the latest Portsmouth accounts highlighted the funding of Michael Eisner at Fratton Park.
BBC Sport shared that the American businessman has pumped £35million into the club over his seven-year spell in charge, with promotion to the Championship finally on the cards this season.
The football finance expert admitted you can lose money as a club, but only with investment from a strong ownership structure, using Ipswich as an example right now.
“It needs backing,” he exclusively told Pompey News.
“We’ve seen Ipswich in a similar situation, not too dissimilar, investing heavily in League One and that investment has carried over into the Championship and everything behind the scenes, and they’re potentially going to be a Premier League club which is a phenomenal achievement.
“I’m not saying that happens to every single club but having a strong ownership structure behind the club and an owner that is willing to commit and turn that into a sustainable model moving forward, not just be there to cover the losses but be there to invest.
“That appears to be the case here, look at the infrastructure and all those other things about how the club develops in the future, it is a vital component of that.
“You can’t just be losing money year-on-year, but you can do that to a degree a couple of times in a five-year cycle if you’ve got the ownership structure to back it and you’re on a much longer-term journey for the club.”

Eisner taking Portsmouth to the Championship
So many things have gone right this season after numerous years of mediocrity at Fratton Park, with John Mousinho at the heart of that.
Despite losses and financial backing by Eisner, the impending promotion back to the Championship will come with a £7-8million boost for the club.
What a season it has been.
