Portsmouth: Finance Expert reacts to agent fee reveals at Fratton Park

Dan Plumley has shared that Portsmouth will be happy with what they have spent on agent fees after their on-pitch success this season.

The FA revealed recently that Pompey had spent £270,965 on agent fees, which is seventh in League One, something the finance expert admitted is expected.

Portsmouth could seal their return to the Championship on Tuesday 16 April, with a single point enough for promotion against Barnsley.

“I think in the context of League One and where they’re at in the pecking order, you would expect them to be on the high side,” he exclusively told Pompey News.

“It’s slightly above the average, the average is tracking at about £217,000 for that particular group of clubs for that year.

There are one or two outliers again, I think Fleetwood seems very high against some of the other clubs you would expect but Derby, Wigan, Barnsley and Portsmouth as well being in that region of the biggest fees.

I think you just expect that given the standing of the club in that league. Not the worst figure to be spending on agents in that league and that season, slightly above the league average but again, look at the roll-through of that into what’s happening on the pitch this season and the likelihood of them getting out of League One and back into the Championship.

If you can make that jump and the £7-8million it brings you in revenue in the long run, then those agent fees, I’m sure the club will be happy to pay that and see that as good business if promotion happens.”

Portsmouth reveal from the FA

Given it was only the seventh-highest figure in the entire division, it shows the good work that John Mousinho has done at Fratton Park.

The £7-8million instant revenue boost from the Championship will be massive for the club, and securing that against Barnsley will start party celebrations.
