Andrew Moon shares update on future of Portsmouth boss John Mousinho

Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho will stay at Fratton Park despite growing interest, according to BBC Radio Solent’s Andy Moon.

Mousinho guided Pompey to the League One title in his first full season in management and is naturally being monitored elsewhere.

The Fratton Park faithful are keen to keep hold of their boss – as well as several key players – as the club readjusts to life in the Championship.

“I don’t see Mousinho or [sporting director] Richard Hughes going anywhere in the summer,” Moon said on BBC Radio Solent on Wednesday (1 May).

“Mousinho leaving won’t be too much of a danger this summer – more if Pompey do well.

“And I think the club will have their best assets in place [come August], plus a few additions. [Colby] Bishop and [Kusini] Yengi, players like that, have done well. But I can’t see promotion-chasing Championship sides coming in for them.”

Can Portsmouth keep John Mousinho for the long haul?

Across the English football pyramid, there aren’t too many managers whose stock has risen more rapidly than Mousinho in the past 18 months.

Portsmouth took an almighty gamble in appointing a man last season who had that year played in the same division for Oxford United.

But Mousinho’s eloquence, leadership and brand of football have extinguished the scepticism by the end of a sublime first full season in management.

Unsurprisingly, there have been talks of other clubs soon circling, something Mousinho himself has previously played down.

Mousinho and his promotion-riding charges seem happy and settled at Fratton Park, eager to get stuck into the challenge of second-tier football.

If the Pompey gaffer were to impress at the next level in the new season, much in the way Kieran McKenna has at Ipswich Town, it’ll undoubtedly be a story to revisit in the coming months.
