Portsmouth Women hit perfect 10 to bring curtain down on league winning season
Portsmouth Women ended their National League South campaign in some style on Sunday, thrashing bottom side London Bees 10-1 at Westleigh Park.
The goals were shared between seven different scorers, in a performance which the Portsmouth FC official website described as “the perfect way for the Blues to wave goodbye to the National League” ahead of next season’s new chapter in the Championship.
Pompey’s transition last summer to a semi-professional women’s team following funding from the Tornante Group, owned by the Eisners, has injected life into Jay Sadler’s outfit. They top the final table with 20 wins from 22 as they prepare for life in the second tier.
The progress has been rapid and reaped instant rewards, as Pompey fans were able to enjoy a photo opportunity with both the men’s and women’s title trophies before Sunday’s game in Havant, as well as the two teams uniting for last week’s celebrations on Southsea Common.
What can Portsmouth Women expect in the Championship?
Pompey can enjoy a truly remarkable season, which has demonstrated what Sadler, his staff and his players are capable of when the financial shackles have been released somewhat.
The Championship, however, is a different kettle of fish and survival will sensibly be the aim in 2024-25.
Of the competing sides this season in the second tier, the majority are now full-time operations with their women’s teams. The ones who aren’t are hybrid, with some professional staff and some semi-pro.
Portsmouth will join National League North champions Newcastle United as promoted newcomers next season – the Magpies won 2-1 when the teams met in the National League Cup semi-finals this season.

Bristol City will come down from the WSL, after winning the Championship title last season. They replace promoted league winners Crystal Palace.
Another considerable cash injection may be needed for Pompey to survive at the new level, but this will be a challenge relished by the ownership, management and players.
