Don Goodman makes admission over Marlon Pack contract situation at Portsmouth

Don Goodman says Portsmouth “must try everything in their power” to tie Marlon Pack down to a new contract.

Pack played a massive part in Pompey’s promotion back to the Championship this season, but his current deal expires this summer.

Sporting director Richard Hughes has already confirmed that fresh terms have been offered to the midfielder, who is now pondering what to do.

In the view of Goodman, losing Pack would be a massive blow for the club ahead of their second-tier return.

“Marlon had the most amazing season – he was outstanding,” Goodman told Pompey News. “Based on that, they must try everything in their power to keep him.

“I wouldn’t have said the same thing had he been average or not been getting regular game time.

“It’s a question of what does Marlon Pack bring to the side, and will he be able to repeat it in the Championship? We’ll only find out over the course of time.”

Portsmouth show ruthless side with retained list

Portsmouth made some big calls with regards to player contracts upon earning promotion, with Pack and Connor Ogilvie the only two offered fresh terms.

Ten others have departed, while talks will take place with Joe Morrell and Zak Swanson over potentially getting them to stay on at Fratton Park beyond this summer.

It goes to show the ruthless nature of football, but it is certainly a no-brainer when it comes to getting Pack to put pen to paper. The club have hopefully offered as good a deal as possible, meaning it is now over to the skipper to decide.

If he does opt to move on, that will leave a huge hole to be filled and potentially a lot of money being splashed out in doing so.

In other Portsmouth news, the club have hired a former Manchester City employee to work in a behind-the-scenes role.
