Don Goodman makes Portsmouth prediction for 2024-25 amid ‘remarkable’ development

Don Goodman believes Portsmouth are capable of finishing in the top half of the Championship in their first season back in the second tier.

Pompey will compete in the division for the first time in 12 years once it all gets back up and running in August after a superb 2023-24 season.

Ipswich Town’s back-to-back promotions to the Premier League means anything is now possible, but Goodman has put the Tractor Boys’ achievement into perspective.

“John Mousinho would have looked at Ipswich and be dreaming of replicating that, although that is a once in a generation thing if I’m being honest,” Goodman told Pompey News.

“Just look at Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday, who went up with Ipswich, as better examples. There is a chasm between League One and the Championship, which only makes Ipswich’s achievement this season all the more remarkable.

“So I don’t envisage Portsmouth doing an Ipswich, but I can see them being a top-half Championship team, and therefore you’re never a million miles from the play-offs – that is a genuine target for Portsmouth next season.”

Portsmouth aiming for Championship survival in 2024-25

This generally aligns with what the majority of Portsmouth fans are expecting from next season. Everybody accepts that survival is the number one target, but anything really is possible in the Championship.

There will undoubtedly be a step up in quality in terms of this season, which Mousinho will be fully aware of as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the August start date.

Momentum really is massive in football, and if Pompey can use that to their advantage then hopefully they can give supporters reason to believe.

The long-term aim will be of a return to the Premier League, but for now it is a case of consolidating and ensuring there is no risk of a return to the third tier any time soon.
