Portsmouth financial frailties raised amid Jamal Lowe transfer news
Dan Bardell believes Portsmouth would have assessed their options financially before ruling out the opportunity to sign Jamal Lowe this summer.
The News reported on 20 June that the Jamaica international is not on Pompey’s radar as a potential signing in this window.
The versatile forward is available after being released by Premier League outfit Bournemouth at the end of his contract.
Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has suggested that a move will have been considered but finances have played their part on a potential deal.
Speaking exclusively to Pompey News, Bardell said: “It’s hard for Portsmouth because they have got momentum.
“When you go up you need to add to what you’ve got but also want to reward the ones who have gotten you there.
“They do have to be careful because they’ve been burnt before and had financial issues.
“I do understand that if the finances aren’t right on a deal that they would just step away and I assume that is what’s happened with Lowe.
“He’s a good player who’s played Premier League football and knows the club but the club don’t want to find themselves in the same position as they have done before.“
Portsmouth not signing Jamal Lowe
Lowe joined Pompey back in 2017 and became a fan favourite for his performances, with Ronan Curtis on the opposite flank.
His best season in terms of output came in his final campaign before he made the move to Wigan Athletic as he scored 17 goals in all competitions [FotMob].
He has gone on to play in the Championship and in the Premier League in stints with Bournemouth, Swansea City and QPR.
Once Portsmouth were promoted and he was released, it felt like a perfect match for the two parties to come back together for the new season.

In a frustrating admission, it now seems as if he will move elsewhere with a move back to Fratton Park seemingly off the cards.
There has to be a reason behind this and finances could be a realistic and fair concern from the club given he is coming straight from a top division club.
In other Portsmouth news, David Norris has backed Pompey to be surprise promotion contenders next season.
