Portsmouth ace Regan Poole sends four-word message to Shaughnessy after contract news

Portsmouth defender Regan Poole is among several of Conor Shaughnessy’s teammates to congratulate the Irishman on his new long-term contract at the club.

Shaughnessy posted on his Instagram page [4 July] to illustrate his happiness and gratitude at signing an improved three-year deal at Fratton Park, as the club reward his stellar performances in helping win promotion last season.

Poole was one of several teammates to give Shaughnessy the plaudits, with it being very possible the former Lincoln City man could return to fitness for the two to form a defensive partnership in the Championship.

“Congrats brother! Well deserved,” he said, with comments from a huge chunk of the squad including Tom McIntyre, who could also be in contention to line up next to Shaughnessy at his former club Leeds United on the opening weekend.

Shaughnessy and who for Portsmouth?

Shaughnessy’s contract exhibits just how important to Portsmouth he has become in the space of a year, with John Mousinho set to start the 28-year-old at the heart of his defence against ex-club Leeds at Elland Road.

McIntyre and Poole are both very adept defenders, but have both struggled with long-term injury lay-offs from last season and are now back on the grass in pre-season.

Ryley Towler also remains in the Pompey squad, though could be loaned out for further experience should Portsmouth as expected bring in further defensive reinforcements.

The tough start to the Blues’ fixture list heightens the need for Championship experience to be added to the squad, something which the club have not wasted time in doing with some astute free transfer deals.

Pompey fans will now be expecting the club to dip into the transfer kitty to comprise a steelier squad, as enormous tasks await against Leeds, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, West Brom and the relegated Premier League trio all before October hits.

In other Portsmouth news, David Norris has criticised the club’s lack of Under-21 side.
