Portsmouth tie down Shaughnessy as new contract announced for scorer of historic goal
Portsmouth have announced a new three-year deal for defender Conor Shaughnessy on the club’s official website.
The club confirmed on 4 July that Shaughnessy has agreed terms on an improved deal, which also includes an option for a further 12-month extension, in the Championship to serve as a huge defensive boost for John Mousinho’s side.
Dubbed “Sir Conor Shaughnessy” by both the club and the supporters following his dramatic promotion-winning goal against Barnsley back in April, those at Fratton Park are delighted to have secured the services of the Irishman after a superb season.
Shaughnessy, 28, signed on the South Coast from Burton Albion last summer and has made a terrific impact, earning the Portsmouth Players’ Player of the Season award and being labelled the signing of 2023-24 in the entire EFL by the Football League Paper [5 May].
Shaughnessy the latest player secured by Portsmouth
Shaughnessy follows captain Marlon Pack and fellow defender Connor Ogilvie in agreeing terms on a new contract at Portsmouth at an exciting time.
Following the announcement of the Championship fixture list and what even the most positive Pompey fan would describe as a daunting start to 2024-25, the need to shape the majority of the squad in time for 10 August has been magnified.
Named in the League One Team of the Year last term alongside his other accolades, Shaughnessy was a near-ever-present for the Blues with 45 league starts, and appears to have found his footballing home.
Albeit just comprising nine games, Shaughnessy does in fact have brief experience of Championship action whilst at Leeds United, and will come up against his former side on the opening weekend of the new campaign.
The next step in the defender’s personal ambitions is what is surely now an inevitable Republic of Ireland call-up, having represented his nation up to Under-21 level.
Now acting as a mentor to younger defensive players at Pompey, Shaughnessy is anticipated to be moulded by Mousinho into an established Championship-level centre-half.
