Portsmouth Women trio pen new contracts as Jay Sadler’s side step up to Championship challenge

Three more Portsmouth Women players have signed their first professional contracts with the club as the side begin their full-time era.

As revealed on the club’s official website [8 July], Nicole Barrett, Scarlett Williams and Izzy Collins have all now begun their professional chapters on the South Coast, in what is a triple boost for Jay Sadler ahead of the new campaign.

Portsmouth will compete in the Championship, the second tier of women’s football in England, in 2024-25 following a sumptuous season last time out in the Women’s National League.

Portsmouth Women wasting no time in offering pro deals

Since a new era of professional women’s football at Portsmouth has been unveiled, the club have tied down numerous players to full-time contracts, alongside up to nine staff.

Ella Humphrey, Annie Rolf, Emily Pitman, Georgie Freeland, Sophie Quirk, Jazz Younger, Riva Casley and Hannah Haughton have all penned professional deals over the summer as the squad takes shape, with head coach Sadler delighted to maintain the nucleus of the title-winning squad of 2023-24.

The investment from the Tornante Company into turning the women’s team from amateur to semi-pro and now professional in just over 12 months has been sublime, and the key will be turned further if the team can stay afloat in the second tier this season.

The club and its competitors are still waiting buoyantly for the fixture list to be announced, which is when things will begin to feel real and Sadler can finalise the assembly of his squad.

It promises to be an even more exciting year on the women’s front for Pompey than the last.
