Teddy Sheringham makes ‘excellent’ John Mousinho admission at Portsmouth
Former Portsmouth striker Teddy Sheringham has credited the job John Mousinho has done at Fratton Park following promotion.
In an interview with the publication [9 July], Sheringham admitted it’s “good to see” Pompey back in the Championship, and hopes the club continue to progress.
Following an illustrious playing career with the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and England, Sheringham spent Pompey’s first season in the Premier League at Fratton Park under Harry Redknapp, arriving at the age of 37 in 2003 and scoring nine times in 32 top-flight appearances.
Speaking to The Real EFL, the 58-year-old said: “[Mousinho] has done an excellent job at Portsmouth and it’s good to see the club promoted to the Championship.
“He is obviously a talented coach, so I hope he stays as Portsmouth are a good club and they can progress well with him in charge.”
Portsmouth ready to excel under John Mousinho
While its well-spoken about how many on the South Coast were sceptical and underwhelmed by the initial appointment of Mousinho, he has won over the Fratton faithful by achieving what many before him failed to, and that was to return Portsmouth to the second tier – triumphantly at that.
The 38-year-old has taken to the head coach role at a club with significant size and history like a seasoned natural, directly moving from his playing career with Oxford United – something Pompey are now the beneficiaries of given his contacts in the game, which have enabled the signings of players such as Josh Murphy and Jordan Archer this summer.
The challenge now for the Blues is to sustain that key momentum from last season and adapt to the step up, with some savvy early recruitment having taken place to bring in players on loan or free transfers with prior Championship experience.

The fixture list has thrown some of the trickiest tests of the season Portsmouth’s way early on, and the first seven league games could prove the litmus test to see how well the team can navigate the ruthless nature of the division.
Sheringham is one of Pompey’s most high-profile players of the 21st century, and his endearment towards the club despite just a solitary season at Fratton during the twilight years of his career shows the effect the place has on a player.
In other Portsmouth news, the club still hold out hope of a reunion with this loan player.
