Portsmouth boss Mousinho denies new contract talks at Fratton Park

Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho has denied there has been any movement regarding new contract talks for himself at the club.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent’s Andrew Moon [16 July] after Pompey’s pre-season opener at Gosport, Mousinho said the focus of the club both on and off the pitch currently lies elsewhere.

Mousinho has been at Fratton Park for 18 months and achieved the elusive promotion to the Championship, with two years remaining on his existing deal.

Portsmouth will enter talks at right time

Provided nothing catastrophic takes place on the pitch for Portsmouth or that there is any breakdown in the relationship between Mousinho and the club’s board, it is expected they will look to keep him for the long haul.

The 38-year-old’s stock has risen tremendously since hanging up his boots and diving straight into management at Fratton Park, proving many wrong as he and his staff secured promotion last season.

Pompey know that should Mousinho and his side perform well in the Championship this campaign, clubs will begin to circle in the hope they can strike a cheap deal to offer a job that some quarters could portray as more “glamorous”.

A recent example of this has been Chelsea’s approach for Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna, who was managing in League One just over a year ago.

But with his current deal left to run until 2026, there is not yet a pressing need for Mousinho and Portsmouth to come to an arrangement; this will be dealt with in good time as one day it is likely to be particularly pressing.
