Andrew Moon: Goalkeeper Cameron Plain on trial at Portsmouth

Portsmouth had ex-Bournemouth goalkeeper Cameron Plain play for them on trial this week, according to BBC Radio Solent journalist Andrew Moon.

He reported via his X account on 19 July that Plain, 22, played in the second half of Pompey’s 3-0 win over Havant & Waterlooville.

John Mousinho currently has Will Norris and new arrival Jordan Archer at his disposal and the club seem to be seeking a third-choice ‘keeper, with Toby Steward on loan at Tonbridge Angels for the duration of 2024/25.

Plain, 22, has been named on the bench 10 times for Bournemouth including in the Premier League, and was released following the expiry of his contract last month.

Portsmouth shaping Championship squad

Portsmouth have now completed three pre-season matches in the past week, securing victories over Gosport Borough, Havant & Waterlooville and Bognor Regis Town.

Fans have turned out in numbers at the grounds of the region’s non-league clubs to see Mousinho’s men put through their paces, and several of the club’s new signings have offered glimpses.

Sporting director Rich Hughes has made it clear Pompey remain in the market for “five or six” more arrivals, preferably with Championship experience as supporters anticipate the cheque book to be put to good use.

Should Plain be offered a contract at Fratton Park, this would likely complete the club’s goalkeeping roster, with a trio on the books supplemented by Steward out on loan with a recall option.

Whilst it’s granted the team have more pressing needs for improvement than a third-choice goalkeeper, it’s clear Hughes is looking to fill every void and fellow trialists Jamal Baptiste and Sean Patton could also offer attributes to Mousinho should they be offered terms.
