View: Portsmouth imminent arrival Jacob Farrell analysed as move from Australia gets closer
Portsmouth are expected to sign Australian left-back Jacob Farrell imminently, and a tactical breakdown of the player has been given online.
Courtesy of Son Stats on X [21 July], Farrell has been given an in-depth analysis of how he can influence John Mousinho’s side.
The two-time A-League champion would become the third senior Australian in the Pompey squad, joined by Sam Silvera and Kusini Yengi.
Portsmouth can use Farrell to great effect
Portsmouth are set to sign a player with promising attributes which can be built upon and executed well.
The stats report from Son points out a strong ball recovery rate down the left-hand side, with an ability to both play and carry the ball out of the defence – a key part of Mousinho’s system in possession.
It was then pointed out that Farrell could operate best in possession when Pompey mould into a back three, allowing the wide players to push way upfield – he would then slot in on the left of a back three alongside Conor Shaughnessy and likely Regan Poole.
The report details that a weak point of Farrell’s play is his crossing ability from his 75 matches in the A-League. This is where he would be encouraged to make runs inside rather than on the overlap, allowing wingers with an excellent 1v1 ability like Josh Murphy the ability to do just that.
The final phase pointed out by Son is where the 21-year-old would be based to cross from when it is required – as naturally it will be for a full-back in the Championship. This would then affect the positioning of the central midfielders, making a case for Owen Moxon to start in the middle of the park.
A versatile player comfortable on the ball and with a good springboard to work from, it is clear why Portsmouth are seeking a player like Farrell to bolster the squad.
