Portsmouth tipped for Premier League promotion by David James
Portsmouth have been tipped for promotion to the Premier League next season by former England and Pompey goalkeeper David James.
Speaking to Football League World on Friday (July 26), James also mentioned Burnley, Leeds United, Luton Town, and West Brom as strong contenders.
He highlighted Portsmouth’s potential and the competitive nature of the Championship, describing it as one of the most unpredictable leagues.
James said: “I think Luton have got a chance of being in the mix, but Portsmouth, of course.
“As I’ve previously said, for the romance of it all, but then you have teams like Middlesbrough as well. I mean, West Brom are always up there. So many teams get up there and are in the mix, then at the last minute, they fall away.
“Ultimately, it’s about how the managers get these teams playing. I just think the likes of Portsmouth and Luton, who are less fancied than a lot of the big names, have an opportunity to take advantage of this.”
Can Portsmouth dream of Premier League promotion?
With the Championship season kicking off in just over two weeks, there’s a buzz about who might secure those coveted promotion spots. Portsmouth fans have every reason to feel optimistic this year.
After years of ups and downs, nothing is stopping the team from making a serious run for the Premier League. The competition is fierce, and the Championship is known for its unpredictability, but that’s what makes it so exciting.

Pompey have the potential to capitalise on the open field, especially with some big clubs experiencing their own uncertainties. It’s been a long journey for the club, but the mix of experienced players and youngsters could be the key to their success.
The dream of Premier League promotion feels more real this season than it has in a long time. And, with a bit of luck and a lot of hard work, Portsmouth could very well find themselves back in the top flight.
