Portsmouth willing to cut ties with two wingers ahead of Championship season – report
Portsmouth could sell both Anthony Scully and Gavin Whyte before the end of the transfer window, according to Darren Witcoop.
Posting on X [31 July], the Mirror journalist reported that Pompey have told Scully he is free to leave Fratton Park following a spell on the South Coast blighted by injuries.
Whyte has also struggled with a consistent run of fitness, having started just 12 times in last season’s League One triumph.
Witcoop’s post read: “Anthony Scully has been told he is free to leave Portsmouth after an injury-hit spell.
“Fellow winger Gavin Whyte could also depart Fratton Park.”
It was previously predicted by Andrew Moon [17 July] that the pair of wingers may depart for a new chapter this summer as John Mousinho and Rich Hughes reshape the squad.
Portsmouth want to sell Scully, Whyte could also leave
Scully and Whyte are two players that to varying degrees, have not had the impact at Portsmouth they nor the club would have hoped.
Whyte, 28, was brought in as a player with prior Championship experience who could even have an impact this season, but will struggle for game time having seen new signings Josh Murphy and Sam Silvera leapfrog him immediately in the pecking order.
The ex-Cardiff man has also previously opened up on his difficulty being away from his young family in Northern Ireland [The News, 19 March].
Scully, 25, started just three matches last season and sees his contract expire next year, prompting the Blues to actively look to recoup a nominal fee on the player.
Mousinho has been tentative [The News, 22 July] when asked about the Irishman, demonstrating that he cannot risk his injury record to be relied upon in a gruelling Championship marathon.
Portsmouth remain in the market for incomings, including a central midfielder and a centre-forward – Danish striker Elias Sorensen is the closest player to being unveiled having flown to the UK on Wednesday night to complete a deal.
