Portsmouth Women continue to strengthen as Irish international becomes latest signing
Portsmouth Women are continuing to bolster their squad and have secured the services of Republic of Ireland midfielder Erin McLaughlin.
As confirmed on the club’s official website [28 July], McLaughlin has signed a one-year deal with a club option of an additional season.
The 21-year-old arrives from Peamount United, where she averaged a goal every three games from midfield.
The Irish international represents another coup for Jay Sadler’s side ahead of the start of the Women’s Championship season in September.
Portsmouth Women progressing well
With a host of professional contracts penned by existing squad members, as well as the signings of several players with a blend of youth and experience, Portsmouth are heading in the right direction.
The club have had to be bold following last season’s promotion and since turning professional have recruited well and often, whilst organising an extensive pre-season schedule which is now underway.
Sadler’s girls kicked off pre-season in style with a 4-0 win at Cheltenham Town, and experimented with several new Blues.
The recruitment of young and hungry international players with proven records in their own domestic leagues, such as McLaughlin, signifies the pull factor Pompey have as players buy into the project.
The recent arrivals of Sophie Barker, Hannah Coan and Megan Hornby among others from the north of England also demonstrates a willingness to uproot and pull on the shirt.
In other Portsmouth news, the men’s team are set to bring in a former Newcastle striker.
