View: John Mousinho lands ideal attacker at Portsmouth as deal struck for 88% Elias Sorensen

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho has an exciting option in Elias Sorensen at Fratton Park.

Pompey will make their long-awaited return to the Championship when they take on Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday (10 August).

Mousinho’s side will be keen to kick off the campaign with a big performance and will hope to take all three points home with them from their trip to West Yorkshire.

Daniel Farke’s side will provide a tough test for Portsmouth, and the match therefore offers Sorensen the perfect opportunity to make an instant impact for his new club.

Pompey confirmed the arrival of their seventh summer signing via the club’s official website on Friday (2 August).

Sorensen has joined Portsmouth from Danish side Esbjerg, penning a three-year deal at Fratton Park which includes the option of a further 12 months.

The forward has previous experience in English football, making 66 appearances for Newcastle’s youth teams, scoring 33 goals and providing nine assists.

He also spent time on loan with Blackpool and Carlisle United, although he failed to find the back of the net across 13 combined appearances for both clubs.

However, fresh off an impressive season in Denmark with Esbjerg, Sorensen will be keen to make an impact upon his return to English football.

The former Denmark Under-21 international collected the Player of the Season award last year as his 24 goals and 12 assists helped Esbjerg clinch the third-tier title in Denmark.

Elias Sorensen ready to make an impact at Portsmouth

Sorensen proved during the 2023/24 campaign just how much of an attacking threat he can be.

An example of this came during a 6-0 victory over Akademisk Boldklub toward the end of the season (31 May). That day, the 24-year-old scored and provided two assists while registering five successful dribbles from six attempts and playing five key passes (Sofascore).

While some supporters at Fratton Park might be slightly concerned that Sorensen was putting up these numbers in the third-tier of Danish football, which is of a lesser quality than the English Championship, those concerns will be slightly eased by Sorensen’s start to the 2024/25 season.

Having achieved promotion to the second tier of Danish football, Esbjerg’s season got underway on 20 July.

And during their second game of the campaign, Sorensen demonstrated that he had no trouble making the step up in quality.

In a 6-3 win over Hobro (26 July), which would prove to be Sorensen’s final game for Esbjerg, the Dane was on hand to provide four assists and grab a goal.

In addition, he also completed six of his seven dribble attempts and played an astounding 10 key passes, while also chipping in defensively by winning seven ground duels.

Indeed, across his two competitive outings this term, he has completed 88 per cent of the dribbles he has attempted [Sofascore].

While the transition to English football might prove tough, Sorensen’s previous experience of the country and impressive form should make that transition slightly easier.
