Portsmouth final Championship position predicted by supercomputer as 17% chance revealed
Portsmouth have had their final Championship position predicted for 2024-25 by a supercomputer, which has ranked the second tier clubs.
As published by Opta Analyst [5 August], John Mousinho’s men have been projected to finish 17th in the Championship table this season, with a 17% chance of a return to League One.
Pompey take to the field in the division for the first time in over 12 years this Saturday, visiting Elland Road to take on Leeds United – who have been heavily predicted to scoop the title after missing out on promotion last term.
Last weekend’s final friendly defeat to Charlton Athletic left Mousinho far from pleased, as further new signings Elias Sorensen and Andre Dozzell bolster the squad.
Portsmouth ranked 17th in Opta predictions
If a poll were to take place in Portsmouth, the majority of supporters at Fratton Park would take a 17th-place finish, disregarding any potential impatience should the team overachieve in the opening months of the season.
After the tumultuous chapter of the club’s history since their last appearance in the division – relegated whilst in administration despite a half-decent end to the 2011-12 season on the pitch – the Blues are now in far better shape off the pitch than in that bygone era.
Nevertheless, the Championship is utterly ruthless at times and any stagnation in progress is punished, which is why Mousinho and sporting director Rich Hughes have undergone a mission to bring in experience of the division to the squad with a limited budget.
Interestingly, Pompey have been expected to start slowly given the tough opening fixtures but go on to navigate a settled campaign, finishing above fellow promoted sides Derby County [19th] and Oxford United [22nd and relegated, alongside Plymouth and Cardiff].
The trip to Leeds may not serve as the immediate litmus test of Portsmouth in the Championship given the Whites’ status as the league’s hot favourites and major scalp.
But a stern performance in West Yorkshire may turn a few heads.
